It took me a while to warm to the characters and story line in How Does That Make You Feel, Magda Eklund? (Ecco, 2024).
I think it had more to do with me than this novel by Anna Montague. Sometimes you just need to be in the right frame of mind. Once I got there I was intrigued to see how the story would develop, how the characters would evolve and how everything tied together.
Perhaps one of the reasons I had trouble at the start is the book is a little slow at the beginning. Almost like I wondered why I was supposed to care.

This is a book about a woman turning 70 finally understanding herself as much as it about the relationships she has with co-workers, friends, patients and family.
Magda, the main character, is a therapist. The interactions she has with her clients are entertaining and probably spot on.
The story line is plausible: best friend dies, that person has planned a road trip for the two of them, but details were lacking, surviving friend decides to head out on her own.
It’s lighthearted with some serious subject matters.
This court is so corrupt until that changes we are in trouble.
