Even as people change, core values rarely do. The person we liked as a child is still there no matter how much they evolve (or devolve) as the case may be. That can be a really good thing.

Friendship, love and gaming are the central themes of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (Vintage Books, 2022) by Gabrielle Zevin.

Sam and Sadie became friends as kids through chance circumstances. Their lives are intertwined for years, but they are not always on speaking terms. The ups and downs of their relationship feel very real. That’s one of the hooks, to see what is going to happen to this decades-long friendship.

Some people will say this is a book about video games. That’s true and not true. It’s the people in the gaming world who are the central characters, though in some ways it’s almost like gaming is a character unto itself.

The gaming aspect is interesting and incredibly integral to the story. Because I know so little about gaming it was fun to learn something through this novel. My high school years of playing Pac-Man and Centipede are the extent of my knowledge.

Don’t let your lack of knowledge or interest in gaming stop you from reading this book.
