A play where robots are the main characters. Probably not something I would be interested in.

And, yet, here I am highly recommending Maybe Happy Ending. This Broadway play is more than humans as robots. In many ways it’s not even about robots. The production is all about relationships. It’s also about discarding things when we no longer have a use for them.

Darren Criss (you may remember him from Glee) and Helen Shen are outstanding as they portray helperbots who have been retired by their humans and are functioning on obsolete technology. Their voices in this musical are rich and full of emotion. The score is fabulous.

The stage is as much a part of the play as the actors. The creativity of it all, the moving rooms, the layers, well, it helps tell the story of these two.

The play opened in New York last fall. It premiered in Seoul as a Korean-language play in 2016.

It’s definitely a play I would consider seeing again, perhaps if it comes to Sacramento or San Francisco. A niece and nephew of mine have seen it more than once. They are who I have to thank for the recommendation.
