I knew I would have plenty of wine to drink when I went to Idaho. After all, my friend, Kim, has a She Shed.

The corks were popping there. But what I didn’t expect was to go to a winery in the land of potatoes.

Sol Invictus Vineyard in Star, Idaho, near Boise was a welcome surprise. And it’s not the only winery in the area. Idaho has 65 wineries as well as three American viticultural areas.

“The most popular wines here include Riesling, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Bordeaux-style blends, and ice wine—a sweet, nectar-like wine made from frozen grapes,” according to Idaho Wine Commission.

At Sol Invictus I could choose five wines to taste from a selection of 12 for a cost of $8. The non-vintage white wine blend and the 2020 Malbec were my favorites. A glass of wine is the same price.

Five acres of grapes are planted on the property, with the remainder of the grapes coming from Washington.

While tastings are possible inside, the patio beckons—even when the view is obscured by smoke. The grounds are inviting. Tables are spaced apart so you aren’t hearing someone else’s conversation.

Owners hope to create an event center on-site; permits from the government are the holdup.

Invictus is Latin for unconquered. With the military being part of the owners’ lives, the labels rotate between being about the military, first responders  and wildlife; with a percentage of sales going to a charity related to these groups, according to an employee.
