So begins my 60th year—at least in this body, on this planet. Really, who knows where I was prior to 1965!
I turn 59 today. I know—not the biggie—not quite yet.

Kae Reed at 6 weeks old in Titusville, Fla., where she was born.
I’m commemorating my 60th year with 60 new things. I don’t know what they are just yet.
I realize this isn’t an original idea. I’m stealing it from a Chico friend who turned 70 a couple years back. I loved hearing about each of her 70 new adventures that year. Hers were not always off the charts, wow kind of moments. They were new and special to her.
That’s what I expect my 60 to be in this coming year—a mix of a-ha moments and ordinary firsts. Some will be worthy of writing about, others might cause people to roll their eyes—like this counts?, while some I might not even mention to anyone—only I will know whatever it was that was special to me.
I envision these 60 things could be travel related, some other experience, an outdoor adventure, maybe reading some classic book for the first time. It could be trying a new food, a new restaurant or making a new recipe. How wonderful it would be if not checking my email for an entire day made the list. That would be a first.
Sometimes our lives become fixed by rituals that make life seem ordinary. Ordinary is fine; that’s why extraordinary is special. I think sometimes we forget to embrace and appreciate the ordinary. That’s why I’m not looking for 60 knock my socks of things to make this coming year special. It’s more about taking notice of how life really is special and different every day.
This concerted effort of noting 60 things equates to only five a month. I’d like to think there will be more than 60 things on my list a year from now. Time will tell. Maybe this endeavor will make me appreciate and realize not every day is the same, and that I have more firsts throughout a year than I took notice of in the past. Whatever the case may be … here goes.
Awesome idea. Forces mindfulness in what could otherwise become mundane. Happy almost 60 😀
What a wonderful idea! I salute you headed into this precious new year where each breath is a blessing. Big huge hugs
I love your idea. One the the things I have found is that having new experiences and learning new things doesn’t have to slow down as a person gets older. In fact, as I’ve realized I don’t have forever, it makes me think about things I may have been putting off, but want to make sure I include. Hope you have a great year!
Happy Belated Birthday. What a great idea 60 new adventures. Can’t wait to hear about them and hope I get to be apart of some of them.
Live and Love every minute you have! I am now looking forward to my 78th birthday at the end of October and I am still looking forward to it because the alternative is the end. I still make lists of what I would like to do although I have to admit it has shrunk because of health issues but just yesterday I looked out at my neighbors Maple Tree which had gone from green to bright red in just 3 days, and I said a quick prayer that I still had eyes to see that beauty. In my opinion getting old is about acceptance that you were lucky enough to have experienced everything in your life so far. Who knows when it ends so enjoy every day ! Look at the trees changing color and think of them as a Birthday Gift that’s what I am doing. Happy Birthday Kae remember to celebrate the life you have already had.
I usually celebrate all month in March.
60 came and went so quickly, now 65 and certainly appreciate special moments with friends….
All good. cjr
